Emanuel Feuermann was an internationally celebrated cellist in the first half of the 20th century. He was considered by some of his peers and critics to be the greatest cellist of all-time. He succeeded at a young age and attained high positions with prestigious orchestras in Vienna, Berlin and London. On April 3, 1933 Feuermann was dismissed from his position at the Berlin conservatory by the newly installed Nazi regime due to his Jewish origin.
Later in Vienna, during the time of the 1938 Anschluss, he and his family were forced to escape to British Palestine. From there he moved to the United States where he made recordings and taught, influencing other musicians who would go on to fame. Emanuel Feuermann died in New York City due to complications from surgery, May 1942 at age 39.
