Camp Kobe, Japan circa 1955. This dilapidated photo album (with no cover) belonged to.
US ARMY Sergeant First Class Roy Arguello. He was much loved by all the Special Services staff at Camp Kobe...Both the indigenous Japanese as well as his fellow service members. 61 photographs include people, events, travels, arts and sports activities related to his time at Camp Kobe. These photos offer an important document of Camp Kobe an American military installation that seemingly only existed for less than a decade.
There's little documentation I could find on the internet... But I know that the camp had a special focus on arts and sports for army morale, welfare, and recreation. There was a Camp Kobe baseball team, swimming team, basketball team & golf course. I get the sense that the young, athletic Sergeant Arguello was probably assigned as a physical activities specialist within the US Army Special Services unit. The 61 photos are pasted to construction paper album pages that are chipped and torn.
Photos are only pasted to one side of each page so they can be removed or cut out without fear of damaging additional photos on the backsides. One small snapshot found inside looks to date from the late 40s and shows him in a bathing suit as a teenager standing next to an automobile (see below).
Album Measures Approx 11.5 x 14 Condition. Photos Are Mostly in Great Condition. Construction Paper Pages Crumbling / Broken.
